One of the things I’ve discovered during JaNo is some of my best writing times are when I sit in the waiting area while:
- My son gets his guitar lesson
- My daughter takes her gymnastics class
- My daughter takes her dance class
I haven’t tried writing at my daughter’s swim lessons. Pen and paper? Or handheld computer? Either way, just add water = instant disaster.
I’m at 15,300 words at the moment, which isn’t even close to 50,000. But it’s a lot closer than zero. And I have JaNo to thank for that.
I’ve also discovered things I never knew that I knew, such as there really is such a thing as a vintage (circa 1983) Star Wars pencil case. A good thing, seeing as I gave one to the chess club president.

Go on. You know you want one.

Sounds like you are doing great. Keep up the good writing and the research.
I love Han Solo.
I always keep a notebook in my van. Often I have to wait on kids at various activities and I hate wasting that time.
15k is better than nothing at all! Good deal!
YES... I TOTALLY WANT ONE. Just saying.
I have the glass (GLASS!!) collectable glasses from Burger King for "Return of the Jedi" and a Darth Vader night light and the Life magazine from the week Jedi was released, among other things.
Dang, I AM a geek...
And, yep, write where you can. I had a friend at WVU who wrote at work when she took breaks to pump breast milk (TMI?) and she WON NaNoWriMo that way!
You did awesome (and way better than me... I'm only at 11k).
An AlphaSmart is good for that, and you can put it in a 2-gallon ziplock bag and take it to the beach or the pool. You can type through the plastic bag, kind of like the greaseguard things on the cash register keyboards at McDonald's.
I've also found you can leave it in its bag, not take it out and get no words written.

About the AlphaSmart: I mean you can leave it in your swimming tote bag and not write. There's no reason to take it out of the Ziplock in order to work.
Even with the right tool, you still have to write. Darn!
My ex DH had nearly the entire collection of original Star Wars toys. Never opened them. He had dozens and dozens of unopened boxes. I bet they're worth tons of money now. Darn, should've asked for them in the divorce. LOL no, kidding.
WTG on your progress.
A: 15,300 words = WOOT!
B: AlphaSmart = Want
C: Han Solo is hawt.
D: Even in cartoon version on a pencil case.
E: Vintage? Next thing you know, my Monkees albums will be antiques. F:When did I get old?
I think I'd prefer Princess Leia - she kicked more butt anyway.
I admire your ability to write virtually anywhere. I just can't do long-hand anymore.
Is that Han Solo?
*sigh*
Great stuff! :)
I've talked to a lot of writers who write during lessons, practices, and games.
I think my second grade boyfriend had the Hans Solo pencil case. :)
